Clerk of Court vs. Tax Collector vs. Property Appraiser

St. Johns County has several constitutional offices with very different jobs. If you're new to Florida, it is easy to contact the wrong one.

Office Go Here For Examples
Clerk of Court & Comptroller Courts and official records Court cases, traffic tickets, jury duty, marriage licenses, passports, deeds and recorded documents
Tax Collector Taxes and motor-vehicle services Property-tax payments, driver's licenses, vehicle registration and license plates
Property Appraiser Property values and exemptions Homestead exemption, property records, assessed values and TRIM notices

Marriage Licenses and Weddings

The Clerk's Recording Division issues marriage licenses and can also perform civil wedding ceremonies.

Florida residents are generally subject to a three-day waiting period unless an applicable statutory exception applies. Couples should review current requirements before visiting the office.

The main Public Service Center offers marriage services Monday through Friday. Marriage services are also available by appointment at the Julington Creek and Ponte Vedra annexes.

Passport Services

The Clerk accepts passport applications at the Public Service Center, Julington Creek Annex and Ponte Vedra Beach Annex.

One important distinction: the Clerk is an acceptance facility for qualifying passport applications. The office does not process ordinary adult passport renewals for applicants who qualify to renew through the U.S. Department of State.

Property Owners: Don't Overlook Official Records

The Clerk's Recording Division maintains St. Johns County's Official Records, including deeds, mortgages, liens, plats and other recorded documents.

The office also offers a free Property Fraud Alert service that can notify registered users when a document associated with their name is recorded. The alert does not prevent a fraudulent filing, but it can help property owners spot suspicious recording activity quickly.
